KS1 Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check is an assessment carried out with pupils in Year 1, at the end of the academic year. It is carried out on a 1:1 basis where children must decode individual words (both real and nonsense words) and read them aloud, showing secure phonetic knowledge and understanding.

Each test is out of 40 words and the 2026 pass rate was 31 words correct.

If a child does not meet the expected standard during their Year 1 check, they will retake the check at the end of their Year 2 academic year. These children will receive the required support, as felt necessary by our school, throughout their second year in order to help them make progress to achieve the expected result the following year.

As a school, we prepare our pupils for this check throughout their EYFS/Y1 academic years. This is done in a fun way through phonics games and songs, particularly with the use of our Jolly Phonics scheme.

Year 1 Pass rate = 14/16 = 87.5%

Year 2 Pass retake rate = 2/3 = 66.7%

 

Y4 Multiplication Check

When children are in Year 4, they are assessed for their mental arithmetic skills through an online multiplication check. This test involves the children completing an online program where they are given 25 quick-fire multiplication questions which they must type the answer to.

As a school, we prepare our pupils for this check throughout their Y3/4 academic years. This is done in a fun, non-stressful way through games and songs, particularly with the use of Times Table Rockstars.

There is no "pass rate" as such for these checks, the children are encouraged to achieve their best and get as many calculations correct as possible.

2026 results:

Full marks = 8/16 = 50%

20+ marks = 13/16 = 81.25%

 

EYFS End of Year Assessments

Each year in the summer term, all of our EYFS pupils are assessed in each area of the Early Years framework. This includes seven areas of development:

The Three Prime Areas

Prime areas build the core foundation for a child's healthy growth and future learning.

• Communication and Language: Developing listening skills, understanding instructions, and speaking clearly with others.

• Physical Development: Building active movement, coordination, control, and fine or gross motor skills.

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED): Managing strong feelings, building self-confidence, and forming positive friendships.

The Four Specific Areas

Specific areas use the foundation of the prime areas to build essential academic and practical knowledge.

• Literacy: Linking sounds and letters (phonics) to build early reading and writing skills.

• Mathematics: Understanding numbers, counting, spatial awareness, and recognising patterns.

• Understanding the World: Exploring communities, the natural environment, history, and the wider world.

• Expressive Arts and Design: Exploring creativity, imagination, role-play, and art.

These assessments are teacher judgements based on eyfs criteria set out in the framework.

If a child achieves the expected standard in all areas of the framework, this is considered a "Good Level of Development" (GLD).

As our year group cohorts are small, each child is a significant percentage of the overall total.

2026 results:

GLD = 8/14 = 57.1%

Prime Areas: 10/14 = 71.4%

Specific Areas: 8/14 = 57.1%

Literacy: 10/14 = 71.4%
